Independence, sovereignty, and the territorial integrity of Ukraine were not given to us as a gift, nor are they values we treat lightly. They are the foundations of our statehood, built upon the heroism and sacrifice of the very best among us. We have an independent and sovereign state today because generations of defenders fought for it and gave their lives.
This day of remembrance commemorates the events near Ilovaisk in 2014. The tragic deaths of hundreds of defenders there remain a lasting reminder: we are fighting an enemy without honor.
Throughout this war, we have already lost thousands. We honor them together during the nationwide minute of silence, pausing each morning at 9:00 a.m., and by visiting military memorials. It is a remembrance of every fallen brother-in-arms and every sister-in-arms who gave their lives for Ukraine, and we honor them by name.
Much remains to be done to fully shape Ukraine’s culture of remembrance for the fallen, but even now we are working to preserve and honor their memory. By remembering those who fell, we carry forward their cause, continue the fight against the aggressor, and restore justice that was violated.
Remember! Avenge!
