Personnel Training Battalion 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine "Azov"

The Personnel Training Battalion (PTB) provides basic and specialist training for servicemen of the 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine ‘Azov’. The training programmes are constantly being refined to take into account the combat experience gained by instructors, thereby enhancing the combat capability of the units.

Training covers firepower, tactics, engineering and military medicine, military topography, countering UAVs, communications and liaison on the battlefield, as well as practising coordinated actions within a unit.

The BVO prepares recruits for combat missions and conducts training for serving personnel within the brigades of the 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine ‘Azov’.

Establishment of the training section

May 2023

A training section is being set up within the 3rd Battalion. It has already delivered four basic training courses. At the same time, work is beginning on forming a team of instructors.

The training section continues its work as part of the training company. It has conducted 14 basic training courses.

Following the unit’s formation, Denys ‘Byk’ Tkalych took command of the Personnel Training Battalion, which continues to this day to carry out tasks relating to the training, instruction and enhancement of servicemen’s combat capabilities. The Personnel Training Battalion provides basic and specialist training, develops a team of instructors and continuously refines training programmes in light of combat experience gained.

Captain

Denys ‘Byk’ Tkalych – commander of the Personnel Training Battalion of the 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine ‘Azov’, captain in the National Guard of Ukraine, and a veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war. He was born on 28 November 1995. In October 2015, at the age of 19, he joined the ranks of ‘Azov’. He took part in the ATO/JFO in eastern Ukraine.

He was in Mariupol when the Russian Federation launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, where, as part of the Azov regiment, he took part in the city’s defence, including in complex assault and rescue operations. He was seriously wounded during the fighting and taken prisoner. After his release, he returned to military service. He subsequently took part in the summer counter-offensive of 2023 and in the fighting in the Serebryansky Forest.

Denis Tkalych currently heads a personnel training battalion, where he trains military personnel, drawing on his own combat experience.

For his military service, Denys Tkalych has been awarded a number of state, departmental and military honours, including: the title of Hero of Ukraine with the Order of the Golden Star, the Order ‘For Courage’ (3rd class), the Medal ‘For Military Service to Ukraine’, the President of Ukraine’s Commendation ‘For the Defence of Ukraine’, the President of Ukraine’s Commendation ‘For Participation in the Anti-Terrorist Operation’, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s Commendation ‘For Fortitude’, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s Honorary Badge ‘Silver Cross’, the ‘Cross of Honour’ from the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine’s award ‘For Exemplary Service’, and the Commander of the National Guard of Ukraine’s award ‘For Resilience and Fortitude’. He was also awarded a certificate of commendation and a personalised firearm – a Beretta 92FS pistol.

To his personnel, Denys ‘Byk’ Tkalych is an example of a combat commander who sets a high standard of military professionalism and personal bravery.
